Botticelli: a new Springtime

The story of the restoration of “Springtime”, painted by Sandro Botticelli between 1477 and 1478. Learning about this famous work of art takes us back to 15th-century Florence. Hi-tech equipment is used over the course of three years to clean the painting and restore it to its original glory as painted by the Maestro 500 years ago.

    Florence And Its Heritage

    A survey of the results of 40 years of restoration of art works and the renovation of monuments, libraries, archives and museums in the wake of the 1968 Florence flood. An operation of colossal proportions that will go down not only in the city’s history, but also in the annals of Art History. In particular: the miraculous restoration work done on Cimabue’s “crucifix”, Donatello’s “Maddalena” and the frescos of Santa Maria Novella. And those of Masaccio and Masolino in the Brancacci Chapel.

    In spite of the ravages of time and Man’s thirst for violence, the world’s oldest illuminated book has survived to the present day. Its purple and silver pages are perfectly preserved. A study of this Byzantine masterpiece takes us to Southern Italy, to ruined monasteries, formidable castles and secret caves with wall paintings by hermit monks.

    The world of this great civilisation of 2700 years ago not only springs back to life again in exceptional works of art, but also in the unmistakable landscape of Italy’s most beautiful region. The film makes a spectacular comparison between natural masterpieces and those created by human beings and highlights how these enhance one another. Hence a “living museum” is presented that is different from any other.

    The Marble Hunters

    A film that narrates the story of “the hunters of precious and multi-coloured marble”, intended to exalt the divine splendour of the Emperors and of beautiful women, warriors and mythical gods, all sculpted in that “stone that shines” against the backdrop of the remote quarries of coloured marble and the quest for remains lost below the sea while they were being taken to Rome.

    Quilici’s most recent award was “The Prize for Conceptual Originality” at the “Agon Festival 2006”, International Festival of Archaeology in Greece, with this motivation: “for the way in which the director demonstrates the relationship between material civilization, social stratification and power”.

Amid natural wonders and the works of mankind, an endless stream of surprises in a truly magnificent setting.
